Polyurethane is a very durable and useful material. The behaviour of this material can be simulated in Ansys. The material can be stretched several hundred percent. But when compressed it behaveas almost like an incomressible fluid. With very large strains and deflections the elements might become very distorted. This will cause convergence issues. The method to overcome is to use adaptive meshing and re-meshing during the solution process. Ansys now support adaptive meshing and re-meshing also for 3D-elements. Other useful applications for re-meshing is metal forming and extrusion. The pictures below show simulations of polyurethane gaskets.
